Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking a Senior Project Manager – Environmental for a full-time continuing opportunity with the Infrastructure Planning and Management department.
Reporting to the Director, Planning and Projects, the Senior Project Manager - Environmental is responsible for leading the strategic development, design and construction of complex and/or high-profile capital building projects, infrastructure improvement projects, and strategic university sponsored projects, valued at up to $200M.
You will serve as MacEwan’s internal subject matter expert on environmental regulatory compliance requirements related to the construction of capital building and infrastructure improvement projects and develop and implement processes and practices to ensure ongoing compliance. You will also be a key contributor in the delivery of the university’s master plan.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing project management practices for projects with environmental compliance factors, including defining the scope, goals, and success criteria for the project(s);
- Establishing and maintaining governance processes to ensure effective decision-making and resource allocation;
- Evaluating progress, identifying risks and issues, and taking corrective actions as needed, which includes providing regular reports and updates to senior management and stakeholders;
- Identifying, assessing, and managing risks associated with projects that have an environmental impact and/or specific building code requirements; then developing risk mitigation strategies and contingency plans, monitoring and reporting on risk levels, and escalating issues or concerns as necessary;
- Maintaining full project life cycle ownership: successful project delivery includes full implementation from initiation to deployment for major and/or high-profile initiatives simultaneously;
- Mentoring and coaching junior team members and sharing knowledge to support continuous learning and development within the team;
- Employing project management best practices and methods to ensure work is planned and executed to meet applicable University standards, quality, code, regulatory and stakeholder requirements;
- Developing a project scope statement as the basis for future project decisions, subdividing major deliverables into manageable subset components and implementing effective project control measures to identify variances from plan;
- Developing and delivering progress reports, proposals, briefing notes, requirements documentation and presentations to various audiences, including project team, sponsors, and key stakeholders; and
- Ensuring that projects proceed according to scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards.

Skills
You will have:
- Comprehensive knowledge of Environmental Liability Management and Environment and Protected Areas Guidelines;
- Comprehensive knowledge of local, provincial and federal environmental standards, regulations and guidelines;
- A thorough understanding of project and program management principles, methods and techniques;
- Solid technical understanding and the ability to define and refine requirements through a project lifecycle;
- A demonstrated ability to problem solve, assess situations, think critically, and apply sound judgment in providing recommendations and making timely and informed choices;
- Strategic thinking, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills with keen attention to detail;
- A proven ability to act as a positive role model and build trust by consistently demonstrating honesty, integrity, and ethical conduct in all interactions and professional activities;
- The ability to lead project teams and encourage collaboration;
- Proven budgetary expertise;
- Knowledge of change management and process management techniques;
- The ability to identify, assess and mitigate risks;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate and present complex subject matter, and effectively engage stakeholders by tailoring the messaging according to the type of audience;
- Self-motivation with the ability to work independently as well as within a broader team;
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to adapt to change and competing priorities and to meet deadlines;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; and
- Demonstrated working knowledge of AutoCAD and project management software such as Microsoft Project and Primavera.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Science or Project Management or a related field.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Accreditation or eligibility for accreditation with professional governing body in Alberta P.Eng. registered with APEGA), Registered Architect or ASET) is considered an asset.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience working in project management for architecture, planning, construction contract administration and significant, complex capital building projects and initiatives, including experience in environmental liability management. Experience performing this work in a post-secondary environment is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated increasing experience in project management (i.e., budgeting, project tracking, and scope control).
- Experience in contaminated soil sites monitoring and remediation programs.
- Experience working within and applying local, provincial and federal environmental standards, regulations and guidelines.
- Experience working in an ISO 9001:2015 environment considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
